Solving the Driveshaft Conundrum

I will be blunt; the driveshaft problem was really making me depressed about the project at this point.  The prices I was being quoted for a driveshaft were just more than I could stomach.  If you haven’t read our previous article on this click back here and update yourself.

A Company Steps forward in a BIG WAY!

After going back and forth on ideas a major player in the driveshaft industry stepped up and took on the project.  I sent them the factory carbon fiber two-piece shaft in hopes they could do something with it, but was told from the beginning that they would probably not be able to do anything with it.  Weeks/Months went by and I didn’t hear much about the progress but recently received some progress pictures. At this time I have no idea what is what really, but am going to get a description from the company once they complete the shaft.  The exciting news I have for right now is:

THE DRIVESHAFT WILL BE PART CARBON PART STEEL!

So a hybrid shaft really.  I have no idea if this has been done before, but from what I have been told they were able to remove one of the carbon fiber shafts and are machining flanges to be able to weld on a steel section to shorten the shaft.  I have no idea if it will be using the original center bearing or CV’s or much of anything, but I will update this article soon as more is known.

At this point it looks like a solution has been found and could be nearing completion very soon, which means the project will move forward.  As of now the only thing keeping the car from being drivable is the fact that I don’t have a driveshaft.  Stay tuned for a future update.
